Matt has a broken ankle. He broke it about five weeks ago playing basketball with some guys from work. They play twice a week on their lunch break. The week before, a guy Matt works with got hurt and ended up in surgery.
I was home with the kids, and some extra kids, when I hear the garage open. I peek outside and see Matt standing next to his car. He was in shock, I believe. I helped him into the house (HOW DID HE DRIVE HOME?) He had jumped up and came down on someone's foot. He thought it was just sprained and didn't want to go to the doctor. He was in a lot of pain and I think he just didn't want to move. His foot and ankle were so swollen. When he was thinking a little more clearly, he decided that it couldn't be more than a sprain and that he would be fine. I nagged him TO DEATH about going to the doctor. Finally, on a Saturday evening (he had hurt it on a Tuesday) when he saw the awful bruising he decided to go to the InstaCare near our house.
The doctor he saw told him it was a bad sprain and there might be a little chip fracture, but no biggie. He asked Matt if he wanted a cast and Matt asked if he needed one and the doctor was like, "Whatever." So he came home with no cast and no real information.
After two more weeks, he still was in a lot of pain and couldn't put his weight on his ankle. He went in to see an orthopedic specialist and discovered that his foot was sprained in a very unusual way and broken. They put him in a boot and he has been using that for the past two weeks. Today is the first day without the boot so we will see how he is doing. I think he goes back in next week. He has been pretty frustrated, he is a hard one to keep down. He mowed the lawn and tilled the garden last weekend and has paid for it ever since. He had all kinds of things planned for his Scouts to do (he had bought snowshoes for them just a few days before he got hurt), swimming, hiking, snowshoeing, etc and has been pretty bummed that he hasn't been able to do any of it. Although he tried swimming and it didn't go well :) Hopefully he continues to heal well and quickly. Poor guy. He hasn't complained (except about all the Scout stuff he can't do) but he has been in a lot of pain and has really been a trooper.
