O Pioneers

Tara called me today and said, "Let's teach the kids about pioneers. Do you want to meet in SLC in 45 minutes?" I said sure. So we hopped in the car and headed out before it got too hot. We parked the car and then rode the train to Temple Square. We had a little bathroom break in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building and then headed to the Beehive House for a tour. The kids were really good, except Austin, who screamed bloody murder the whole time. (I found out later that day he had another double ear infection. Hello? Are the tubes in his ears even working?)
The kids all brought their science journals and kept stopping everywhere to write something down or draw a picture. After the Beehive House we grabbed some rolls and raspberry butter and milk from the Lion House and sat outside and had a little picnic. The journals and rolls were quickly abandoned when the kids discovered a little wall to use as a tightrope.
Next up was the Church History Museum where we had the kids look at the covered wagon and ship model and handcarts, etc. They all took time out to record things in their journals and our third stop was going to be the This Is the Place Monument, however, I cute it short to take Austin to the doctor. Tara decided to head to our house and (after the doctor) we had a lovely afternoon of letting the kids tear the house apart while we watched Forever Strong. It was hilarious to listen in on the things the kids were pretending. It was a fun little adventure and we decided we really need to do things like that more.
