The Potty Nightmare

Derek (just barely 3), does not want to be potty-trained. No desire whatsoever. Ok, that is not completely true, when he was about 22 months old, he would sneak up to Zack's room, take off his diaper and put on Zack's underwear. I had to wrestle diapers back on to him. Maybe I missed my chance there, but I had an 8 week old baby, I wasn't about to start potty training at that time.

Then, about a month ago, I decided it was time. Derek didn't agree. He screamed and freaked out for two days while I tried forcing him to go potty. I gave up....after all I don't want to traumatize him completely. I decided we will wait for a while and try again later.

This morning, at 6ish, I heard screaming. Derek is NEVER awake that early, so I knew something was wrong. When I got to him, he was at the top of the stairs... (my room is on the main level, all the kids are upstairs.) screaming..."I DON'T WANT TO WEAR UNDERWEAR.....I DON'T WANT TO WEAR UNDERWEAR....PUT MY DIAPER ON, MOMMY......PLEASE!"

I led him back to bed, telling him he did have a diaper on and to go back to sleep. Yeah, like that worked. Now all the kids are awake as I am typing and it is only 6:30am. We will save potty training for another day.

Anybody have tips for getting a recalcitrant toddler to want to go potty? (Is that even a correct usage of recalcitrant? It just seemed to fit...)

I bribe my kids with candy, stickers and new underwear. Have you tried that? Or maybe you're not into bribing. I don't know.

yeah...I am totally into bribing. It worked great with Zack. I let Derek choose underwear he wanted....he went for Spidey. We looked on Toys R Us Website for a toy he could have once he was trained....he decided on a storm trooper costume...but now he is willing to give up that dream live in diapers forever. I guess he is just not ready.

We need to talk! I am in the exact same situation right now. And I mean EXACT! We've tried it all. My friend loaned me a book that I am currently looking through. I think it has some very useful info for my little guy's situation. It is called Toilet Training Without Tears by Charles E. Schaffer & Theresa Foy DiGeronimo

Good luck.....
(to us both!)

Well, you know. A quick, cold shower worked motivational wonders for Soren. :0)

We had a tough time with Claire- it wasn't that she didn't want to be potty trained, it was that she didn't care if she went pee in her pants. it took a long long time- we used bribery at the end- we used princess polly pockets because that is what she was into at the time. I would show them to her one at a time and say if she went pee in the potty and not in her panties she would get one (or one of the accessories, like shoes). If she had an accident I took what we gave her away- she still had accidents for a long time and I think a big part of that was i was pressuring her to be potty trained before she was ready. I hear from a lot of people to just wait until the kid does it themselves (I just don't think day would have ever come for Claire by herself!)
