My Three Sons

The title for our blog came about soon after Austin was born. My dad called one day to check on the boys and started humming the theme from the show "My Three Sons." You know, from Nick at Nite? Anyone remember that show besides me? Anyway, I thought it was pretty cute.
For those of you I haven't kept in touch with as often over the last few years, here is an update on our family: Zack is four, soon to be five years old. He is a thinker and is always coming up with hilarious questions. He is always asking things like, "Mom, what is a mispit?" (He meant misfit, he had been watching that Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer movie from the 60s and they sing that song, 'Why am I such a misfit...' My answer was something about people who think other people don't like them. The next day we were driving along and he said, "Mom, am I a mispit?" "No," I replied. "But mom," he said, "Nathan (a neighbor) doesn't like me so I am a mispit." And thne there is, "Mom, why is it called milk? Mom, why is called cookies?" I got so tired of answering these questions that one day I said back, "Why are you called Zack?" His immediate reply was, "Because I start with a Z." Hmmmm...Anyway, he is a lot of fun, loves superheros, drawing and playing with any toy. He can sit and play for hours. He is a great big brother and loves to help me around the house. Derek is 23 months old and as my brother-in-law so politely put it, "very active." He is very sweet and loving and has quite the talent for causing mischief. He especially loves to "cook" aka smashing anything he can find into a pot and adding water. Oh, and the time he filled the bathtub with water and marshmallows. (how do you spell that anyway? ) The majority of his mishaps occur when I am feeding the baby. He loves his brothers and whenever anyone is sad or upset he runs to pat their back and give them kisses. He loves to be helpful and tries to do everything Zack does. He is really a lot of fun. Austin will be three months old this week, wow time really flies. He is really easygoing and happy. He smiles and laughs all the time, sleeps all night and is really just delightful. Whenever one of his brothers comes to play with him, he will get a huge smile on his face. He is content to just watch everyone around him. He is so much fun. Matt and I are having fun chasing the kids around, despite their antics. Matt is a computer programmer and I am staying at home with the kids. We have lived in Utah County for five years and we love it here. Life is good and we feel very blessed.

I loved this quick rundown on your family to bring us up-to-date. I was especially amused with your stories about Zack. Soren always asks me "why," too. I hate it. I have come to loathe that question. I used to wonder what the big deal was when mothers would complain about the "why" stage, now I know and I'll never doubt again. :) j/k. Actually, I've found a good way to deal with it. If it's not a "why" I can answer with a simple and age-appropriate answer, I say "No, X." And then we just start going through the alphabet and he gets totally distracted from his initial interrogation.

I'd love to see more close-ups of your kids. I don't think I've ever really seen them before. We ran into you that once at the Festival of Trees, but your little man was all bundled up and you were pregnant with another. I can't even remember when that was. I think it was probably Zack in the stroller and Derek in your belly. We didn't have Anders yet.

I can't wait to read more!
