Zack to the Rescue!

My little boys love superheroes. They love swords, light sabers, jumping off furniture, all that kind of boy stuff. One day a few months ago Zack asked if he could have a superhero cape. I was hot and miserable and 9 months pregnant. I had no desire to go shopping in search of a cape so I decided to be creative and make some. I have to preface this with the fact that I have absolutely no sewing skills. Nada. I do have a sewing machine that I can't really use. Last time I pulled that out was to make pillowcases for Girl's Camp four years ago. It ended with me crying hysterically and Matt going to Wal-Mart in the middle of the night to buy 25 pillowcases for Girl's Camp. He called it is contribution to me keeping my sanity. :) Okay, that was a long side note. Basically I do not sew. But I took an old bedsheet, cut two capes out and then cut the boys initials out of felt and sewed them on. I must say, I did a great job as long as no one looks too closely. So I took this cute picture of my little superhero boys.
Because Zack loves superheroes so much, whenever I need help with anything he will shout, "Zack to the rescue!" and get a diaper or whatever I ask him for. My best example of Zack to the rescue happened a few weeks after Austin was born. I had started to lose enough of the baby weight that I had no clothes to wear, so I decided to go shopping. Knowing I couldn't handle the mall with all three boys, I opted instead for Target. I thought (stupidly) that I would buy a few shirts and be on my way pretty quickly. I grabbed a few things to try on and headed toward the dressing room. Of course, Target won't let you take the whole cart into the dressing room so I unloaded all the kids and my merchandise and headed to the dressing room at the very back of the changing area. It was a tight squeeze to get all of us in there, Austin's carrier was kind of wedged between the door and the mirror. The boys were sitting like little angels on the bench and I proceeded to try on clothes. All of the sudden I spot movement out of the corner of my eye. Sure enough, Derek had ditched us and was sliding under the door. I bent down to grab his leg but he slipped out of my grasp and took off running. I am in awe of how fast he moves. Well, seeing as I was not fully clothed at the time, I yelled, "Zack get, him, NOW!!" I opened the door and Zack took off running. I knew Derek would be gone by the time I un-wedged the car seat, I left Austin there and I ran out of my dressing room while pulling on a shirt which I am not sure I had on all the way by the time I got out into the open. I got to the dressing room entrance, fully expecting to see my children waiting for me shamefacedly but they were not in sight. I started to really panic then and I started looking around, while keeping the dressing room in sight so Austin wouldn't be kidnapped while I was searching for the other boys. About two seconds later I heard screaming and I look to my right and there is my hero, Zack, dragging Derek up the aisle by the hood of his sweatshirt, Derek kicking and screaming all the way. I could not believe how far away he had run. It was really scary. I grabbed both kids, gave them hugs and a lecture for Derek, headed back and collected Austin and my shirts and we headed home. Needless to say, after that experience I pretty much only leave the house in cases of extreme emergency if I have all three kids in tow. :)

Too funny! If you do venture out again, you may want to consider collars and leashes...

Ha ha ha! I laughed all the way through this post. So great. I could just picture you tearing through Target half clothed and frenzied looking. I would be terrified, too, though. We lost track of Soren at the beach once. Luckily, he had just wandered a little ways over to the lifeguard tower to look at the yellow truck and we found him within about 30 seconds of losing him. :) Still, that was a terrible 30 seconds. It's amazing all the horrible outcomes your mind can come up with in just 30 short seconds.

Anyway, I love the capes and I'm quite impressed with your sewing prowess. :) I don't even own a sewing machine...that's how great my skills are. :)

That was hilarious! Well, of course not the part about not being able to see Derek, but looking back I bet even you can laugh a little. Aren't boys exciting!

The capes turned out fabulous and extremely detailed, for someone who 'doesn't sew'.

Claire has always been a runner- every where we took her, she ran off- had no fear of other people. I have lost her at the mall dozens of times. The scariest for me was when she was not even two years old yet, and I lost her at the zoo, for about 5 minutes. I was so panicked that someone had taken her. That little rascal.
